Because HVAC systems have grown increasingly complex, job applicants require more formal education and training. Courses at the associate's degree level can include science, mathematics, and communications; the technical aspects of installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC equipment; and interpreting blueprints and understanding building codes and regulations.

Following the completion of a bachelor's degree, additional field training or a formal apprenticeship can be required. Training times vary from 2-5 years and can include paid on-the-job training along with course work. With a bachelor's degree and career training, HVAC job prospects should be excellent.
