The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) strictly regulates the field of aviation technology, especially mechanic certification. The easiest path toward certification is through one of the nation's 200 FAA-certified aviation maintenance schools. While military experience helps pave the way toward a career in aviation maintenance, most people coming from the military also must take courses to fulfill FAA requirements.
Academically speaking, you can earn a diploma, associate's degree, or bachelor's degree in avionics. All of these programs should include courses in math, physics, chemistry, electronics, computer science, and mechanical drawing. Aviation technology diplomas and degrees can be completed either online or on-campus. Certification exams need to be completed in test centers (which are offered across the nation), in order to assure authenticity. Your diploma or degree program should offer you information about taking the exam.
