Headed for a Career in Counseling
Ask Your Question
Question
I have an associate's degree in fashion design, a bachelor's in liberal arts, and a master's in counseling. While in college I worked as an international model and aesthetician, and became interested in the psychology of self-esteem in women. Could you suggest a doctoral degree to further my education and career interest?

Answer
If your career goal is counseling women in self-esteem issues, you'll need a Ph.D. in psychology or counseling to practice professionally in the United States. Your master's degree in counseling may give you a head start in satisfying the requirements for the degree. Accepting transfer credits is up to the school, though, so be sure to check with the individual program.
Once you satisfy the course requirements of a Ph.D. program, you'll begin a phase of self-directed study. At this point you can focus on women's self-esteem issues and develop a dissertation project. Your 'insider access' to the world of fashion and modeling should give you an interesting take on the topic... not to mention a valuable set of contacts, in case you focus your research in this direction.
