Question

I am in my forties and looking to shift into another career direction. I have a BA in Business Administration and a MS in Urban Affairs. I am considering getting another MS, in city planning. I also have a real estate license. After years in youth and community service management, I am looking for a change, but want to maintain a good salary. Thank you for your assistance.

Answer

Most job opportunities for urban planners are found in prosperous, rapidly-growing urban and suburban communities. Job opportunities may be best if you're willing to relocate. Whether you'd like to remain where you are or move, your local planning office can be a good resource. Make an appointment with a planner and go with a list of questions about planning jobs, the education required, and any other questions you may have. As of January 2007, there are over 70 colleges and universities with accredited degree programs in planning. Another great resource is the American Planning Association.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings for urban and regional planners are $53,450, although salaries vary widely by region. Most jobs are available in local government, although other employers include state and federal governments and the private sector. Salaries are better for those who become American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certified.

Your degrees in business administration and urban affairs provide a good foundation for a career in urban planning. Check to see if any of the classes that you took for your urban affairs degree are transferable toward an urban planning degree. Good luck!
