Question

I am interested in earning an LL.M. (Master of Law). Can I earn an LL.M. degree from any country? What kind of specialized programs are available and will an LL.M. allow me to sit for the U.S. bar examination?

Answer

Historically, LL.M. degree programs were created for English speaking countries, only. Now they are offered all over the world, including in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The LLM Guide: Master of Laws Programs Worldwide can be a good resource. Some LL.M. programs offer online degree options, making your geographic location not so important.

LL.M. degree programs include various foci. These include tax law, bankruptcy law, environmental law, human rights law, commercial law, intellectual property law, information technology law, estate planning, international law, insurance law, and more. For more information, you should go to the International Graduate: Graduate LL.M. Programs in the U.S. website.

The LL.M. degree generally does not qualify you to sit for the U.S. bar examination; for that, you need a JD (Juris Doctor), which is what people mean when they refer to a law degree. Additionally, many LL.M. degree programs require the completion of the JD as a prerequisite. Unless you also have your JD, having an LL.M. degree may not allow you to practice law in the U.S. However, the LL.M. degree can allow you to continue extensive research in a variety of areas of law, which can increase your knowledge and credibility in your area of specialty. Good luck with your studies!
