Question

Can I take an ESL class and get a GED online?

Answer

Yes, there are a number of programs available online for both ESL (English as a Second Language) and the GED (General Educational Development) test preparation. In fact, you'll find a range of options in both areas. ESL classes are available in basic literacy, business English, TOEFL exam preparation, and more. High school equivalency classes may either offer focused preparation for the GED exam or a more comprehensive education leading to a high school diploma.

Choosing the ESL and GED classes that are right for you depends on your goals and your level of expertise. Is the GED credential your primary goal right now, or are you hoping to get a well-rounded general education and develop your language skills?

If getting the GED credential is your primary focus, take an exam preparation course that covers the five areas of the test: writing skills, social studies, reading, science, and math. If your English language skills are weak, those first three--reading, writing, and social studies-- could pose a challenge. An ESL class focusing on these basic literacy skills can help strengthen your abilities. For example, a class that offers grammar and vocabulary instruction is going to be more helpful than a class in English pronunciation.

If, on the other hand, you're going back to school to develop your education and communication skills, you might consider an online high school diploma program instead. High school diploma programs are more likely to offer a thorough version of the high school curriculum.

Whichever path you choose, you can expect your distinction as a high school graduate and your improved language skills to open doors in the working world.
