Question

I want to have a career as an esthetician, but I want to have a college degree first. I was wondering what classes I should take in college and what I should major in that would look good in that field.

Answer

Medicine is the most practical route here. If you're considering an associate's degree, there's medical assisting and nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Natural Health might be another consideration, or you could earn a B.S. in nursing. Our Online Health Care Degrees & Courses page can give you a better feel for different medical degrees out there. Many of these would provide a solid anatomy background that would benefit a future esthetician.

An acquaintance of mine is taking a four-month intensive-study program to become a medical esthetics nurse specialist. She has been a nurse for years and holds a BSN. After she completes her program, she could work in a clinic, plastic surgeons' office, hospital, or medi-spa. If you're considering being a medical esthetician, you might seriously consider a nursing degree, although it's not necessary. Medical estheticians, by the way, demand higher salaries than non-medical estheticians.

If you're certain you'd like to be an esthetician, you might consider earning that license first. Each state varies in its licensing requirements, but programs can generally be completed within a year.
