Question:
I excelled in math at school, and I'm very good at calculating. I love making money and being successful. Everybody says accounting is the right job for me. I do think so. However, I'm not really interested in business. I prefer multimedia communication. I find this very fascinating. But I'm not very creative since it requires creativity to be a successful multimedia designer. I'm not sure which career I should choose.
Answer:
You have a head for numbers, but it sounds like your heart isn't in it. I would suggest following your interests instead. Pursuing multimedia instead of accounting does not mean you have to give up money and success. Multimedia communications is an exciting, growing field with plenty of career opportunities.
It's also a broad discipline that draws on a variety of different skills, both creative and technical. With your aptitude for math and performing calculations, you'll probably have no problem mastering the technical training. If you find yourself drawn more to the technical than the creative aspects of multimedia, you can focus more on the programming roles rather than graphic design.
But before you write off your creativity, take a multimedia or graphic design class. As you learn about the multimedia tools available to you as a designer, you might discover a creative vision that you didn't know you had. Creativity can be cultivated--that's the purpose of art and design schools.
Give yourself a chance to develop your creativity. If it still doesn't feel right, you can focus on the technical aspects of multimedia design and help bring others' designs to life. Either way, you'll be part of an industry that excites and challenges you.
