Question

I am a stay-at-home mom hoping to get back to work soon. I have a business degree, but I'd like to teach. What's the best way for me to become a teacher? Someone suggested that I get my master's degree in education, but I'd like to teach K-4th grade. What's the best path to take?

Answer

If you've already earned your bachelor's degree, apply to a few master's in education programs. Graduate programs in elementary education often accept students from diverse backgrounds. If additional classes are required, they'll probably be at the undergraduate level. You can take these classes ahead of time, either on campus or online (make sure you take classes from accredited schools only).

Before starting, make an appointment with someone in the education department at the school(s) where you plan to apply. Bring your business degree transcripts and a list of questions. Some questions you should ask include:

  • What classes would I need to take in addition to the standard requirements?
  • What's the maximum number of transferred credit hours you accept?
  • What's the minimum undergraduate GPA for acceptance into your education graduate program?
You can complete a teacher education program completely online, but not all online education programs lead to teaching licensure. Teaching licensure programs require students to complete coursework and at least one semester of student-teaching. In all 50 states, teachers must be licensed to teach in public schools.

Teacher education programs are often competitive. The more research you do, the better your chances for acceptance!
