Getting a Job with Your MBA
Ask Your Question
Question
I am currently going to school to finish my bachelor's degree in business management, and I will finish in about 4 months. I will start a program for an MBA in the fall. What kind of position can I hope to get when I have a master's degree? I am currently the Sr. Fiscal Analyst for my company. I handle all of the accounts payable and payroll. I have been working in the accounting industry for about 20 years. But I want to branch out from the typical 8-hour behind the desk job. I want a more exciting career. My children are older, and I'm more mobile. My schedule is more flexible now.
Answer
A common route for MBA degree-holders with your experience is investment banking. In this work, you might be managing mergers and/or acquisitions, issuing bonds, lending money, and advising management buyouts. You could also be involved in marketing campaigns. If you'd like to travel in your job, this line of work might allow you to do so. Investment banking jobs are found in government and in the private sector.
Another career on the rise for MBA graduates is consulting, which could provide opportunity for global travel. In his businessweek.com blog, Steve Shu interviewed management consultant Mike McLaughlin. About the consulting industry, McLaughlin said: "...one can make a lot of money in consulting. You can get about ten years of normal industry experience in about two years." And he mentioned extensive travel.
Reading business-focused newspapers, such as BusinessWeek and Forbes, can keep you informed about MBA job opportunities and about important news/trends in the business world. With an awareness of the industry and an MBA, you should be able to find the right career opportunity to fit your goals.
