Question

I'd like to become a licensed practical nurse. What classes and education are required? Where can I find a state-approved LPN school? Is it possible to earn this degree online?

Answer

To become a licensed practical nurse, you'll need to pass a practical nursing program, which often can be completed in one year. You'll take classes in anatomy, physiology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatric nursing, drug administration, nutrition, and first aid. There are over 1,500 state-approved LPN training programs in the U.S., which can be found at technical or vocational schools and community colleges. I'm not sure entirely online LPN programs exist, since hands-on experience is so crucial. But once you've completed your clinical training, there are online nursing programs that supplement it, to allow you to further advance your career.

Once you complete your nursing program, you'll need to pass a licensing examination called the NCLEX-PN in order to begin your career. All U.S. states require LPNs to pass the NCLEX-PN. Your nursing program should help prepare you for this exam. More information can be found on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) website. Good luck!
