Question

I wanted to ask you how long you have to go to college to become a pharmacist. I'm just in sixth grade, but I want to start as soon as I can. Is there a summer school in Pennsylvania for kids who want to be pharmacists? Thanks!

Answer

Preparing for a career at such a young age is good, but make sure you pursue other interests along the way. To become a pharmacist you'll need a bachelor's degree (which usually takes four years), and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (which takes at least three more years). You could first become a pharmacy technician, which can help you gain valuable work experience while you study. This certification can be completed within a year or two.

Pennsylvania has plenty of summer science camps, including many chemistry camps. You and your parents can find information about various Pennsylvania chemistry camps at KidsCamps.com. Another good source for finding Pennsylvania summer camps is MySummerCamps.com.

In addition to summer camp, ask your parents to help you contact a pharmacist in your town to see if you can shadow him or her on the job. Shadowing a pharmacist once or twice can be a good learning experience. If it's not possible to go on the job with a pharmacist, simply meeting one who can answer your questions would be great.

Once you start high school, take all the science courses you can, especially in chemistry. As a high school student, you might be able to find work in a pharmacy. Of course, you won't be able to do the work of a pharmacist, but even sweeping up a pharmacy can earn you great experience. Good luck!
