Earning a Ph.D. While Abroad

I have a master's degree in education from the United States. I'd like to attain my Ph.D. from the U.S. while living abroad. What are my options?

You can study online to earn a PhD or EdD in education from an accredited U.S. college while living abroad. You can take classes part-time or full-time, often on a flexible schedule that allows for different time zones. While some universities may require you to occasionally visit their campus, other programs may allow you to complete all requirements online. Whichever program you choose, make sure it is from an accredited institution.

There are many different doctoral programs available in education - the one you choose depends on your ultimate professional goals. Do you want to be an administrator, a teacher, a policy expert? Choose something that reflects your passion, one that will help you accomplish your professional goals. Three common choices are:

• Educational administration -- choose this to become a school principal, superintendent or college dean.
• Counseling/psychology -- to become a school psychologist or guidance counselor.
• Educational or instructional leadership -- to find top-level work in academia, educational research institutions, or government agencies.

Doctor of Education (EdD) programs often have more specific foci, including postsecondary and adult education, children's literature, human services, criminal justice, and more.
