Question

I have a BSE and MSE in engineering and an MBA, all from accredited universities. I also have 20 years' experience as an engineer and have completed one year toward an engineering PhD. I quit before I finished, but my dream is to complete that degree. I now have a wife and kids to support and I live in a small town with no universities. Do you know of any PhD or EdD programs that would allow me to finish from here?

Answer

First, let's distinguish between a PhD and an EdD. A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy degree, can be used for advancement in a variety of careers. A PhD could potentially expand career options as an engineer or a businessman, and could open doors to academic positions. An EdD, or Doctor of Education degree, is specifically related to education. Earning an EdD can make you eligible for positions in education, but it won't hold as much weight as a PhD for jobs in other areas such as engineering and business.

Given your location and family status, studying online might be your best option. You should also seek information from the colleges and universities nearest your town, even if they are a long drive away. Some PhD programs offer online education options, but require students to attend campus lectures or other events from time to time. Before you sign up for any program, find out how many of your credits from your previous program will transfer. On that note, have you asked the college where you began your PhD if you could complete their program online? Another thing you'll need to consider, given your small town location, is how to gain access to the research materials needed to complete your dissertation. Good luck!
