Question

If I take my social work classes online, will I be able to test for the State Board Exam in Texas?

Answer

Yes. As long as your degree in social work is from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program, you can take the licensing exam offered by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners. The CSWE accredited 442 Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programs as of 2004, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a qualifying program. See the Texas Department of State Health Services for more information.

If you are already taking social work classes as part of an online bachelor's or master's degree program, that program must be accredited by the CSWE. If you are taking those classes to satisfy the course requirements of a different accredited degree program, it's up to that school to decide whether the classes you take online will count toward the degree.
