Whether a prospective student is interested in working with children, helping couples in crisis, consulting businesses on their policies or analyzing criminal behavior for law enforcement agencies, Colorado psychology schools can give students the understanding of human behavior and development they need to succeed in their chosen career.

Just as there are a number of choices for career paths in the psychology field, there are also various choices for where students can study. Colorado is home to 18 institutions around the state that offer degree programs on various levels, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

Online Psychology Programs in Colorado

Students in Colorado interested in pursuing a psychology degree program have numerous options that can meet their interests and educational goals. There's any range of related programs available from undergraduate certificate programs to doctoral programs in the field. Additionally, there's a number of areas students can focus on, such as cognitive psychology, biopsychology, comparative psychology, educational psychology, abnormal psychology, child psychology and forensic psychology.

The following are examples of the types of degrees that psychology students can earn:

Certificate. Students in psychology certificate programs learn the fundamentals of the field while also taking practical courses that can be used to start their careers. Students in this program can expect to study subjects like social psychology, abnormal psychology, human development, personality and social problems.

Associate's Degree. An associate's degree in psychology, which typically takes about two years to complete, gives students an understanding of psychological concepts and relevant research. Students in these programs learn about human behavior and the things that influence it, such as biological and environmental factors. Also, students in these programs take courses in abnormal psychology, how psychology impacts society and public speaking.

Bachelor's Degree. Students who earn bachelor's degrees in psychology may enroll in either a B.A. or B.S. program. In a B.A. psychology program, the curriculum will usually require students to take liberal arts and general education courses, and a B.S. degree program will necessitate more science classes. Both programs give students a more in-depth understanding of psychological theory, and students can expect to take courses in subjects like cognitive psychology, the history of psychology, psychology research methods and industrial organizational psychology.

Master's Degree. Similar to a bachelor's degree in psychology, students who want to pursue a master's degree in the field can enroll in either an M.A. or M.S. program. These programs, which, on average, take about two to three years to complete, give students a deeper understanding of psychological theories and how they can be applied to real-world situations they will encounter in their careers. Students in these programs study topics like advanced research methods, life span development and workplace motivation.

Doctoral degree. Students who earn doctoral-level degrees in psychology can pursue a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. degree, which can take approximately five-to-seven years to complete. In a Ph.D. program, students are required to focus more on the theoretical side of psychology and research, while Psy.D. programs tend to be more hands-on in nature. Students enrolled in psychology doctoral programs can expect to study topics such as data analysis, ethics in the psychology profession and social psychology.

According to data compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in 2013 more than 8,000 students in Colorado earned psychology degrees from colleges around the state. The following table outlines the schools in Colorado that granted the most psychology degrees during that year.

Career Opportunities for Psychology Graduates in Colorado

The Colorado Health Institute reports the local health care industry employed 360,000 workers and brought in over $40 billion into the state in 2012. Additionally, the amount of jobs in the industry has increased 10.9 percent in recent years, despite a sluggish economy that's limited local growth in other fields. As a result, psychology graduates in Colorado have a number of employment options, including various health care facilities:
