Question:

I’m currently in the 10th grade with a decent GPA (3.8) and I really would like to take my education to the next level. I’m a highly motivated student with great leadership skills. I’ll be working this summer however, in my spare time it would be nice to do some online pre-college courses. This will not only prepare me even more for next year and college but it will also keep my mind sharp. I’ve searched a lot on the internet with no success. What would you recommend and in your experiences, what are the best courses that I should take?

Answer:
It’s wonderful that you are such a motivated student who likes to keep learning and keep your mind sharp. These qualities will help you when you apply to a college program.

I have done some searching on the internet and am glad to tell you that there are in fact many “online pre-college course” programs available. It seems that many of these programs are being offered at colleges and universities that also have traditional programs. (To find some look up “online pre-college” or call your local college or university.)

As you do your career planning, it might also be wise to talk to your guidance counselor. You say you would like an online course, and there are many, but local community colleges also have good courses in the summer.

Since I don’t know your interests, I can’t advise you what subject to take—although I do suggest sticking with topics that you are really enthusiastic about (rather than to meet some requirement).

Courses can range from art to science, from English to history. If you are doing this purely for mental stimulation you might want to get even more specialized and take a course on something that is a little unusual but intriguing. Finally, since you mostly want to keep your mind active, there are also many kinds of courses offered both in the local community and online that are primarily for interest as opposed to credit.
