Mr. Greechie,
I’m exploring business programs. One of the issues I don’t understand is accreditation. What does it mean? Should I consider it in applying?
Sanford M.
Nashville TN

Hi, Sandy!
I’m glad you brought up this issue; I’ve received several inquiries about it. Accreditation is largely misunderstood. However, students should be aware of it as a factor in choosing a business school.
Accreditation means that the school or program meets the standards prescribed by the accrediting institution. Accreditation signals to employers, potential students and other [...]

Question:
Mr. Greechie:
Could you advise me on cybersecurity?
Gar F.Z.
Duluth MN
Answer:
Hello, Duluth!
Glad to hear you’re concerned about this issue.
Information technology and broadband – particularly cloud-based services – help to improve productivity, approach new markets, generate sales, etc… Whether your digital presence involves sophisticated or services or a simple website, it’s vital to your company.
And wherever there’s advantage, there are perils. There are more reports of thefts of digital property than physical property – that must be a sort of milestone for the [...]

Question:
Dear Mr. Greechie
Could you write something about the House Committee on Small Business? Its function?
Dr. Wayne S—
University of Missouri
KCMO
Answer:
Doctor,
Interesting question!
Congress created the House Committee on Small Business in 1941, but it didn’t become a permanent standing committee until 1975. Congress then gave it increased influence, including jurisdiction over small business issues, financial aid to businesses, some regulatory matters, and reduction of paperwork (always welcome!). Since 2011, the committee has been chaired by a Congressman from Missouri, Sam Graves.
In the [...]

Question:
Dear Mr. Greechie:
Could you write something about financing a business in compliance with shariah law?
Thank you.
Muhammed in Detroit.
Answer:
Hello, Muhammed:
You’ve mentioned a field that’s been getting a lot of press. As the Muslim community becomes more affluent, so is its reflection in world finance.
To give my readers some background: many Muslims interpret the Koran as prohibiting charging (or, by extension, paying) interest on loans, although the issue is debated in the Islamic community. The prohibition applies specifically to riba (an Arabic [...]
