Question:
Dear Counselor,
I wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl. I graduated with my LPN four years ago when I was 20 and left nursing after only a year and a half. I was terrible. I didn’t take the work seriously and although I wasn’t fired, no-one tried to stop me from leaving. Now that I’ve matured, I realize how serious the job is and I want to do it again. Should I go back? Can I [...]

Question:
Dear Counselor,
My daughter has been a nurse for three years now and she loves it. But she is so busy working and taking care of others that she is not taking care of herself. She used to be a very physically active person, but now she says she has no time. This actually started when she was in nursing school and holding down a part time job at the same time. Since heart disease runs in our family, I’m worried. [...]

Question:
Dear Counselor,
I’m curious but never knew who to ask. I don’t mean to be disrespectful, I truly am curious. What is the point of International Nurses’ Day or Nurses’ Week?
Thanks, Geoff
Answer:
Dear Geoff,
Thanks for your question – you are very likely not the only person to wonder.
First, what is International Nurses’ Day or Nurses’ Week?
The event began several years ago when the International Council of Nurses (ICN) decided to highlight each year the birth date, May 12, of Florence Nightingale. She [...]

Question:
Hi, my mom wants to go back to school to become a nurse. I’m heading into college too, so we were wondering if we might do it together. She’s worried about being the oldest one in the class and what the teachers, other students, and the nurses and doctors are going to think about someone her age in nursing school. What can I tell her? She’ll be 45 in four years, when she would graduate with a BSN. Thanks. Molly

Question:
Dear Counselor,
When I read some of the nursing forums on the Internet, there are a lot of discussions about nurses who are afraid of losing their nursing license, getting write ups and other stuff. I’ve wanted to become a nurse ever since I was a little girl and now I’m just a few months away of graduating with my bachelor’s. Is it that easy to lose your license? Thank you, Morganna
Answer:
Dear Morganna,
Congratulations on being close to finishing your nursing program. [...]

Question:
Dear Counselor,
I know that all jobs have their own languages and abbreviations, but I’m really confused about the different types of nursing and the many abbreviations they have to represent themselves. Since I’ve become a nurse, I still can’t for the life of me figure out what the person is in addition to being a nurse, with all the alphabet soup behind her name. Help! Rashelle
Answer:
Dear Rashelle,
What a great question! There really are so many certificates and nursing specializations [...]

Question:
Dear Counselor,
I am going to nursing school in Texas. I will graduate with my bachelor’s of science in nursing next year, I hope! Anyway, I’m not very interested in working in hospitals as much as I am in outreach, such as with an organization like the Red Cross. I’m not sure if I want to work in disasters in other countries, but I would like to help other Americans for sure. Can you help me to figure out what I [...]
