Question:I’m nearly done with beauty school, and already losing sleep over taking my cosmetology license exams! I have test anxiety and am worried I won’t do well. What’s the test like?
Answer:First of all, know that if you are prepared for it the test won’t be as bad as you think. The practical exam is first and it might take you a little while to find your rhythm, especially in an unfamiliar place. The practical exam will ask that you demonstrate a variety of techniques and procedures, paying special attention to client safety and sanitation. Just remember these two principles and your hands will remember how to do everything else. Once you have completed the practical exam, you will have a break to eat and then take the multiple-choice written exam. Study your vocabulary extra hard for this one, because sometimes unfamiliar terms can trip you up. Your exam results are immediately calculated, so if you pass both parts you can go home with your license that same day!
Make no mistake, it will be one of the most exhilirating and challenging days of your life. Here’s a few tips to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible:
- Choose a good friend or family member for your model. Moral support is everything.
- Get some sleep. Do the best you can, whether it be popping a Benadryl, taking a long hot bath, or just practicing breathing techniques. You will want to arrive at the test well-rested and alert.
- Eat breakfast. Although you will need to get to the test building very early in the morning (it was still dark when I got there), as soon as the adrenaline burns off you will be hungry. Eat a hard-boiled egg, some cheese, a piece of toast, whatever you can get past the butterflies in your stomach.
- Study. Have one of your beauty school friends drill you on sanitation, chemical safety and operation procedures. Make sure you know your material inside and out a week before your test. You can cram the night before, but anything you aren’t clear on will trip you up during the exam.
