Question:
I’m currently finishing my bachelor degree in English, but I would like to become a Special Education Teacher. Are there any programs I can take while I earn my bachelor degree, or should I wait until after and enroll in a master degree program in special education?
Answer:
Special education is an excellent field to get into. It is currently one of the fastest growing areas of education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the industry is expected to grow by 17 percent over the next 8 years, which is faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for special education teachers is largely due to the growing number of students requiring extra support in the classroom, and the high number of learning disability diagnoses.
It is important that teachers receive proper training and education so that they are equipped to justly service these students. You will need to complete an approved training program in special education teaching before you can be considered for a position. The good news is that most states have alternative methods for entry for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in another area. You may be able to complete a teaching certification program, which only requires a bachelor’s degree for entry.
My recommendation, however, is to enroll in a master’s degree program in special education upon completion of your bachelor’s, if possible. This may give you an edge over the competition and because your bachelor’s training is in a field other than education, will better prepare you for your desired job of a special education teacher.
