Question:
I’ve been teaching for 22 years and truly love my job. I’m just not sure whether going back to school is a wise investment. Are there master degree programs that will help “old school” teachers like me learn new teaching methods involving technology?
Answer:
In my opinion, education is never a poor investment. Often times taking class a class or going back to school to earn a degree gives teachers that extra refresher needed to feel that they are their best. They emerge feeling more enthusiastic and are equipped with many new ideas to use in the classroom, which ultimately benefits the students also.
There are several master’s degree programs offered in education, including online degree programs. You may want to consider this option because all of the work is done on the computer using technology. It would be great practice for you to become more familiar with new tech advances to take back to your classroom.
Many degree programs have technology components embedded in the curriculum because of the enormous role tech plays in today’s world. One degree program, however, that is specifically designed to teach you to work with the latest advancements in technology is a master’s degree in educational technology. This program is for those who are not only interested in learning about technology, but wanting to implement more advanced technological practices for a school and hoping to train other educators in multimedia development.
If this sounds like too much concentration on technology for you, I recommend choosing a different area for your master’s. As stated earlier, most education programs today involve at least a fair amount of information about technology and the usage of tech tools. Good luck choosing a program that advances your education and prepares to further develop your technology skills.
