Question:
I am deciding on a major and am thinking about becoming a teacher. I really love kids, but am not sure that it is enough to become a teacher. Can you tell me about some other characteristics a teacher should have? Thanks for your help!
Answer:
Deciding on a major can be very stressful, however, it is great that you are asking questions and finding out information before you make any solid commitments. I have crossed paths with many successful teachers throughout my career. While many of them differ in teaching practices and philosophies, they often have many of the same strengths, qualities, and traits.
I have listed some questions to ask yourself. Take some time to consider how relevant they are to your personality. Hopefully they will help you see more clearly some characteristics that are found within successful educators.
-Are you as strong communicator who is able to get your point across?
-Can you work cooperatively among several different types of people?
-Have you been told that you are intuitive, trustworthy, or dependable?
-Do you consider yourself creative?
-Can you demonstrate patience in a number of different situations?
-Are you flexible and do you have the ability to think on your feet?
-Are you able to hold your ground and stick with decisions that you have made?
-Do you firmly believe in the value of a good education and the power of our educational system?
-Are you energetic and fun-loving?
While of course there is not one exact type of person who has what it takes to become a teacher, if you answered yes to the majority of these questions, a successful career as a teacher could be in your future. Get started on your bachelor’s degree in education!
