Question:
I’m an architect and I’m considering starting my own firm. Is this a good idea? Are there any particular problems for entrepreneurs in this field? What has the experience of other architects been with small businesses? Do I need any special preparation?

Answer:
The challenge for entrepreneurs is that they need a set of skills quite aside from their professional field. A look at the Entrepreneur Architect website shows that it’s no different in your field. They’re concerned with the business processes involved in running a business. Depending on your background, you’ll need some coursework to prepare for your venture.

As with any enterprise, a strong business plan is important. It’ll help you to make decisions in the future. What’s more, it’ll show potential backers that you have a clear vision for your firm and that you understand the industry.

Finding those backers is an important first step. Take a look at some finance programs and see how they relate to start-ups.

Of course, general management skills are important – developing strategy for the company, making decisions about partnering, etc… You can study management online to apply them to an architectural company.

Marketing is part of any business. A few marketing classes – maybe a certificate or a degree – will teach you to meet the challenges of marketing services like architectural design.

Technology is important in the field. Some tech classes will give you a good foundation in these skills. You’ll learn about general information technology and apply the knowledge to architecture applications.

No one can keep books intuitively, but every business needs them. If you’ve no background with spreadsheets and double entries, some study in accounting will give you the basics of recording cost and revenue.

In fact, there are programs in entrepreneurship that will give you all the background you need. Couple a certificate or a degree in this field with your expertise as an architect, and you’ll be on your way!

While you’re planning, keep in touch with the Small Business Administration. It has terrific support programs for small businessmen.

And remember – you can always study online from your office while you’re running the business. A commitment to lifelong learning will keep your skills current, and your business expanding
