Question:
Dear Guidance Counselor,

Please help me. I need my GED now. What is the fastest way to get it? Would an online diploma be better? I need to make a better life. Thanks, Joanne

Answer:
Dear Joanne,

I think it’s a great move for your career planning to get the GED.  The GED is offered to adults who were not able to complete their high school education and want to get their diploma equivalency. The good news is that 95% of universities and colleges accept the GED in place of a high school diploma and will admit you with this credential if you meet their other requirements. Most employers also feel that the GED is an acceptable alternative to the diploma.

Every year more than half a million people take the GED tests. They take them in local testing centers in their home state and they prepare ahead of time with practice tests and group study sessions.

You say you want to get your GED right away but the fact is that it’s important to make sure that you make sure that you have time to practice for the exam. Here are a few things to know:

1) You Cannot Take the GED Online: Many people want to know if they can take the GED online. Perhaps you have wanted to try this option yourself. There are many ads offering the GED online. But the truth is that these ads are a scam. You cannot take the GED online; you can only take it in an official testing center.

2) The Best Way to Find out About the GED: There is an official site online with all the information you need about the GED. It is the American Council on Education GED Testing site. Look there for GED facts, links to videos, and all kinds of information about how to prepare well and where to take the test near you.

3) Prepare Well: The GED is a set of five tests. To do well on these tests, it is important that you spend time preparing yourself. Do yourself the favor of studying. How to best study? Call your local adult education center or visit your public library. They will have materials and may also know where you can take a GED preparation class. There are also preparation classes online. While you cannot take the actual GED online, these online study courses are fine.

4) Online High School Diploma? You might be wondering whether to work toward an online high school diploma instead. There are many advertisements about these kinds of programs as well. Some online diplomas are valid and others are worthless. Make a good check before you invest your money. Will they teach you something or do they just take your “life experience” and give you the diploma? Do they offer it to you right away or do you have to put some time and effort in? If you are unsure about the program that interests you, call your local community college and see what they think of a credential from this school.

Next Steps:

Are you ready to get your GED? Go to the American Council on Education and find your local center. Get your preparation supplies and begin to practice the tests. Soon you will be on your way to passing the GED.

Please look at this link to find a GED testing center near you. I should cost around 75 dollars, depending on the state.
