Question:
I’m a 12th grader…math-computer and am in a fix. I’m finding science stream rather difficult to catch up with.. I may have second thoughts about changing my stream and switching on to commerce after 12th….probably going for CA or management. Will a science student who has absolutely no clue about commerce be able to cope up with one of the toughest sections in commerce??? I am really interested in astronomy…..but many people, say that is extremely tough and lots of years will go into studying…….I would like a job which involves lots of traveling and being in the open rather than in a confined office please…please help me out…..

Answer:

Your question has a lot in it, but the primary sense is that you are a high school student who is thinking seriously about your career. It is wonderful that you are being so careful and thoughtful in charting out future possibilities.

It sounds like you are trying to make some career decisions between science and commerce and that you question your ability to do well in parts of each of these. You are also passionate about astronomy, which is of course, one of the sciences.

My first thought is that you might want to speak with a guidance counselor at your school and/or a career counselor or coach. Career counselors will get to know your unique interests, skills, and talents and help you to match them to careers. Your guidance counselor will know your specific high school record and so, could be helpful in knowing which classes may be too challenging or easy.

You say that you have already had an aptitude test, which is great. Career counselors can give all kinds of tests to help find out what career areas might work well for you. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, MBTI, is one of the most widely used of the career tools.

My gut reaction is that you should not rule out an astronomy program even with the difficulties you mentioned. You love it, and having a passion for a subject is a wonderful step to being able to do well in it.
