Question:
I am getting ready to start my senior year in high school. Over the years I have noticed I have an ability to write really good books. So, how do I get recognized and get started?

Answer:
How wonderful that you have discovered an area you have both a passion and ability for. Writing is a talent that you can use and polish your entire life. While getting published can be challenging, there are many ways you can get started in writing.

What kinds of things do you like to write? Do you prefer fiction, poetry, children’s books, memoirs, or non-fiction? Of course, right in your high school you might have the opportunity to offer your skills to the newspaper or literary magazine (if you have one). You can also write a blog or be a guest writer on someone else’s blog. You might be able to volunteer or intern for a local paper or magazine.

If you are serious about publishing a book, there are many reference books to help you. Look for books that list publishing markets for writers. There are also online websites for writers about markets for publishing all kinds of writing.

Finally you might want to consider joining a writer’s group—either in your school, among friends or even online (there are many writers communities there). Organizations like the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators are also helpful for information and networking.
