Question:
I just graduated from high school, and I’m not sure what to do next. My parents say I need to go to a four-year college to succeed in life, but I just don’t enjoy school. Are there rewarding careers out there I can get with an associate’s degree?
Answer:
While your parents have a good point that a four year college degree can open up doors to certain careers, there are absolutely many types of jobs available that can be obtained with an associate’s degree. Typically you would get an associates degree (two year degree) at a community college and the area of study would be fairly specific and “hands on”.
Some examples of two year degrees would be health specialty areas like LPN, dental hygiene, radiation therapy and many other assistant or technician type jobs found in hospitals or clinics. Sometimes these jobs become stepping stones to advanced degrees and careers in the health fields.
There are also two year degrees in areas like criminal justice and communications. You might find that your degree allows you to get an entry level job in these areas, but to go further, you will need a four year degree.
The good news is that once you have finished your associates degree you have the option to transfer to a four year program if you wish. So enrolling in a program for an associates degree can certainly be a reasonable way to begin your career development planning.
