Question:

I am a retired school teacher, with previous experience as a sales rep. with 2 major corporations, and am licensed as a real estate agent and financial planning. (Life, Health, and Securities)  My interest lie in public speaking, traveling (in the US or abroad), training adults, event planning.  Being confined to one place all day just isn’t something I enjoy at this point in my life.   I am not sure what is available for me.  HELP!

Answer:

With all of your diverse work experience, I can understand why you are having a difficult time deciding what your next career might be! It sounds as though you might like to work in a career which offers you a chance to travel and interact with new people everyday. With your background in teaching, coupled with your financial planning and real estate experience, have you ever considered teaching continuing education classes for real estate agents?

As you know, licensed real estate agents need to complete continuing education classes every year, and these classes are often one-day event seminars which are taught by people who have a passion for public speaking and a knowledge of business and real estate. Teachers of continuing education classes also get to travel quite a bit, as there are real estate agents in every area of the country which need to take these classes every year.

If you are going to teach real estate continuing education classes, not only will you have to create interesting and informational seminars which real estate agents will want to attend, but you will also need to successfully market your classes and yourself. The latest computer technologies can be helpful when preparing visual presentations, managing a diverse work environment, and running the day to day operations of a small business. If you feel that your skills in marketing, communications, or computer technology could use some strengthening, then you could take some online classes in these areas. As a public speaker, you might benefit from even a few classes or, if you have the time, you could pursue a degree in communications or business while preparing to teach real estate seminars and continuing education classes.
