Question:
What’s the difference between medical billing and medical coding?
Answer
Medical coding and medical billing go hand in hand. Medical billing cannot be submitted to insurers without correct medical coding. Therefore correct medical coding is the key to medical billing. But there is a distinct difference between medical billing and medical coding.
Medical coding is the process of translating descriptions of medical diagnoses taken from the medical record–such as transcribed doctor’s notes, lab and radiology results, and visits or procedures performed–into universal medical code numbers. The diagnosis medical codes are referred to as ICD-9 or International Classification of Diseases 9th Edition, whereas the visit or procedure codes are referred to as CPT or Current Procedural Terminology.
These medical code numbers are used together to bill government health programs, private health insurance companies, and workers’ compensation carriers to process payment of medical claims for services rendered by a health care provider.
Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on the claims to insurance companies. Many online or campus colleges offer medical coding and medical billing programs. You can earn a certificate, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or diploma. Request information at Online-Education.net about program details and upcoming classes available online or in your area.
