Question:
I’m really struggling to make time for my CEUs. I work full-time and have a family. I know I need the CEUs to keep my license, but finding time take classes is so difficult. What do you recommend?
Answer:
Taking part in continue education and gaining enough continuing education units (CEUs) is necessary to continue qualifying for your nursing license, be you a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). Also called compentency for relicensure, the purpose is to ensure that nurses are kept up-to-date on nursing issues in the United States.

Requirements for CEUs or contact hours vary according to state. For example, the state of Nevada requires 30 hours of nursing-related contact hours, while Texas requires 20 hours. Some nurses have many opportunities to fulfill their state’s Board of Nursing requirements, but others may have difficulty finding the time to do so, as you are.

Online nursing education is a good alternative to in-person training, so if you feel that you can learn online, this may be a good option for you. Keep in mind however, that some skills can’t be taught online and there may still be times that you must do a continuing education class in person.

If you are looking at online courses, ensure that the courses are recognized by your state’s board of nursing. If you can’t find that information on their website, call the office to get the information you need. It’s best to find out before spending the time, than after.

Good luck!
