Question:
Do guys who go in to be a nurse have to work only in certain areas? I’ve only seen men in emergency and in psychiatry.

Answer:
Men are entering nursing at increasing numbers, which is a good thing. Although nursing is overwhelming staffed by women, there is no reason why a man can’t be a great nurse in any area.

It does seem that men tend to be drawn to certain areas in nursing, such as intensive care (ICU) and emergency. While only 6 percent of nurses in the United States are male, almost half of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are male. What is interesting about this is the specialties pay higher salaries than floor nursing, particularly CRNA salaries. Their average yearly wage is $160,000.
Statistics show that men tend to go for further education than women and as a nurse gathers more education, he has the chance to move up in management, do research, teach, or do many jobs that aren’t in the public eye, such as floor or clinic nursing.

If you want to be a nurse, being a man won’t stand in your way. There are still a few areas where men are working on making inroads, obstetrics, for example. Men aren’t traditionally seen in labor and delivery, but that doesn’t mean they can’t work there – they just need to get there first.
