Question:
Which types of lessons are taught in an LPN degree program? Do instructors cover the same topics in an online LPN program as they do in a campus LPN program? I just want to know what I’m getting myself into academically if I were to enroll in either type, as both types of programs are an option for me.

Answer:
Nurses who graduate from a licensed practical nurse program (LPN) in the United States are taught the same basics regardless of where or how they study. While there may be a few differences in extra courses or optional studies, all programs must prepare the nursing students for the national licensing exam, the NCLEX.

Every state has its own board of nursing (BON) that grants you, the new LPN, a license to practice. They have their own requirements you must meet before they will allow you to write the NCLEX. If you meet their requirements and pass the exam, you are eligible for LPN certification in that state.

The overall structure of a typical LPN degree program, either at a traditional school or an online nursing school includes (among others):

Anatomy and physiology
Fundamentals of nursing, theory and practical
Psychology
Nutrition
Medical/surgical nursing
Obstetrics
Pediatrics
Mental health
Clinical practice rotations

The main difference between the online LPN program and the traditional one is where you may do your theory courses. Online, you may do them where ever you have an Internet connection and at your convenience, within the set timeline. However, because nursing is a hands-on profession, anyone studying for an LPN degree must still do practical hands-on work. This includes nursing labs, where you learn how to take blood pressures, give baths, give medications, change dressings, and so on. Some science courses may also require hands-on lab experience.

Of course, the clinical practice rotations are also in person and must be completed in various facilities as directed by your school.

Good luck in making your choice and in a successful career as an LPN.
