Question:
I’ve been looking at different RN programs, both locally and online nursing school. What is a HESI though. I haven’t seen it but on some boards I read, the nursing students say they have to write a HESI test. This isn’t the same thing as the NCLEX, is it? Thank you. Joshua
Answer:
Hi Joshua,
The HESI exam is the Health Education Systems exam. Not all schools require it but many do because they feel it is a good assessment of your overall academic knowledge. This isn’t the same thing as the NCLEX, the national licensing exam to obtain your RN license. Some registered nurse programs will use the HESI scores to determine placement in the program.
The exam evaluates your grammar, vocabulary, math and science ability. According to one resource, the questions include:
–Reading comprehension
–Vocabulary and general knowledge
–Grammar
–Critical thinking
–Basic math skills
–Chemistry
–Anatomy and physiology
HESI exams may also be given at some point during a nursing program and as an exit exam, depending on the school.
If you apply for a nursing school, check to see their policy for the HESI exam. Some schools have a waiting period for rewriting the exam should you fail.
