Question:
Where can you work as a certified nursing assistant?

Answer:
Certified nursing assistants (CNA) have a valuable role in the health care system. CNAs provide the basic hands-on care from providing hygiene to helping patients mobilize, move around. They generally work under the supervision of registered nurses (RN) and/or licensed practical nurses (LPN), known as licensed vocational nurses (LVN) in some places.

CNAs are employed in many areas and, while some jobs may be harder to find than others, there are many different opportunities available.

Areas where CNAs may find work:

Nursing care facilities. Most CNAs work in long-term care, rehabilitation or assisted living facilities. Here, they may work one of three shifts (days, evenings, nights) or 12-hour shifts (days and nights). Tasks may include:

– Changing beds
– Toileting patients
– Cleaning, bathing, and grooming patients
– Handing out food trays
– Feeding patients or supervising meals
– Getting patients in and out of bed, helping transport
– Answering call bells
– Providing companionship

In some cases, CNAs may take vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature and pulse, as well as take samples for tests, such as urine or stool samples.

Hospitals. In hospitals, CNAs do pretty well what they do in nursing care facilities, but the patients are more acutely ill and there are more members of the nursing team around, such as registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN).

Home health care. CNAs can play an important role in home health care. While nurses may visit patients to perform nursing assessments and tasks, such as changing dressings, checking medications, etc., a CNA may be asked to go in to perform the other physical tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and so on.

Out-patient clinics. Some clinics employ CNAs to help with many of the tasks that come up every day.

As you may see, there are many options, but what is actually available depends on where you are and who is hiring in your area.
