Question:
I have earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in health sciences, a master’s in education administration, and am working on my Ed.D. in educational leadership. I would like to teach classes online. How do I get started finding appropriate online teaching jobs?
Answer:
I’m impressed by your qualifications! Because the baseline requirement for postsecondary teaching jobs is a master’s degree–of which you have two–you’re well on your way to being qualified for an online teaching position. Because you have master’s degrees in both health sciences and education administration, I would think you could seek online teaching jobs in either category. Because you are planning to pursue a doctoral degree in educational leadership, it appears that education is your field of choice. In either case, I would start by exploring online colleges’ individual websites to learn what their hiring requirements are, and how to apply. The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) has a good website that lists online teaching positions as well.
I would also add that today’s online colleges really focus on real-world, industry-relevant instruction. Because of that, the majority of these colleges want instructors who not only have the requisite degrees, but who also possess significant work experience in their chosen fields as well. You mentioned your educational background, but didn’t allude to any work experience; do you have experience as an education administrator? Be aware that most online colleges will consider professional experience heavily in their hiring decisions, and that, of course, you’ll likely need to complete formal online teacher training before being allowed to teach any course.
