Question:
I’m earning my bachelor’s degree in psychology, and everyone tells me I’ll need to go to graduate school before I can get a job. I want to go to graduate school eventually, but I’d really like to work for a few years first. What jobs can I get with a bachelor’s degree in psychology?

Answer:
This question was interesting to me because I started my career in psychology after graduating with a bachelor’s in English. I worked in Maine at a mental health center as a case manager for people with severe mental illness. Basically I was in a supporting role (help them, through daily assistance, to stay out of the psychiatric hospital) and while it was helpful and therapeutic to the clients, it wasn’t therapy.

With your undergraduate degree in psychology, you could similarly work in a support role in a number of settings: inpatient psychiatric, day treatment, half-way houses and outpatient clinics. The jobs you might find will tend to be entry level and poorly paid- but they are rich in experience and well regarded by graduate schools, who will respect your commitment to the field. You could also receive supervision and training.

I think you are wise to try out a job like this- it is also a good way to see if you do indeed want to invest the time and money in a higher psychology degree.
