Question:
I am looking at other career options. I have a major in finance and have been working in compensation consulting for about 5 years. I feel that I am a mix between a technical worker and business man. Any suggestions on careers I could transition to with little decrease in pay? I’ve been looking at appraiser and surveyor careers as they seem like a good mix but I’m not sure where to start.

Answer:
As someone who describes himself as “a mix between a technical worker and a business man”, a career in real estate appraisal or surveying could be an excellent option for you. These careers both require a worker to complete physical tasks outside of an office environment, such as inspecting a home for a loan appraisal or surveying the property boundaries of a parcel of real estate. Both also offer the potential for self employment, which can allow you to own and operate your own business.

Of course, either career path requires you to complete some educational training and supervised work, which means that you can expect a decrease in annual earnings until you become established in your chosen career field. The good news is that as a real estate appraiser or licensed surveyor, you can expect positive job growth and good hiring prospects in the future, as well as similar wages to what compensation consultants and other HR professionals make. Median salaries for both appraisers and surveyors were in the $50,000 range, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As a college graduate with a degree in finance, you can most likely complete the required educational course work online, and then begin working with a supervising appraiser or surveyor shortly thereafter. Both occupations will require state licensing or certification, so it is important to research your state’s specific requirements. I suggest you start by investigating the online appraisal programs at both Ashworth College and Allied Schools, and check out the online program at Ashford University that can help to prepare you for a career as a surveyor.
