Radiology Technicians Enjoy Strong Healthcare Career Opportunities

Rapidly advancing healthcare technology is providing great job prospects in certain areas of allied healthcare. X-ray technicians, also known as radiology technicians, can find jobs in physicians' offices, imaging facilities, and surgical clinics as well as hospitals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that x-ray technicians with training and experience will likely enjoy the best job prospects.

Seeing What's Inside: X-Ray Technicians Provide Diagnostic Images
X-ray technicians use highly technical imaging machines to take radiographs, or x-rays, of the human body. Although many x-ray technicians can find employment with an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree is desirable, and may be required for administrative work. X-ray technician coursework will include biology, anatomy and physiology, medical ethics and terminology, and practice in the use of imaging equipment, x-ray safety, and imaging procedures.

X-ray technicians are typically required to assist and position patients for optimum imaging results, and to properly shield themselves and patients from unnecessary exposure to radiation. Technicians also ensure that x-ray images are made according to physicians' orders. Radiology technicians must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work as part of a team. Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions are essential. X-ray technicians who wish to move into healthcare administration or teaching will likely need a bachelor's degree or graduate degree for the best employment opportunities.

X-Ray Technicians Continue Training
Healthcare technicians working with complex equipment must stay up-to-date on the latest equipment and procedures. X-ray technicians can expect to attend ongoing education as industry equipment and procedures change.
