Master Degree: Corrections Degree and Programs
Correctional treatment specialists may need a master's degree in criminal justice, social work, or psychology. After all, they're responsible for counseling offenders and creating rehabilitation plans for parolees and other ex-convicts. Both traditional and online education programs offer these master's degrees.
A master's degree may also be necessary to advance to a supervisory position or further promotions. Additionally, you can gain relevant experience in corrections by working in pretrial services, criminal investigations, or substance abuse treatment, among other jobs.
Some correctional treatment specialists may be required to complete a State or Federal training program, and to pass a certification exam that can include written, oral, psychological, and physical components.
Finally, you should have a good working knowledge of corrections laws and regulations, writing skills, excellent listening and interpersonal skills, and familiarity with computer technology.
