Marine Corps Tuition Assistance: Background & Summary
You can use your military benefits to pursue an education while serving on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps. You don't need to pursue your education until you are out of the marines, but if you do, you can then use your GI Bill benefits to help pay for school. Thanks to the U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Program, you can get the money you need to get a degree while you serve.
Who is Eligible Marine Corps Tuition Assistance?
In order to be eligible for the benefits available through the U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Program, you must be serving on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps. All ranks are eligible, but officers must sign an agreement to serve at least two years of active duty, concurrent with other duty obligations.
How to Get Marine Corps Tuition Assistance
When you apply for benefits under the U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Program, you must first apply to, and be accepted by, an accredited university or other covered institution. Tuition Assistance benefits may be used to pay for on-campus or online degree programs. You are not limited to a single institution, and when you are transferred to another duty station, you may use your tuition assistance benefits to take courses at other institutions.
What's Covered by Marine Corps Tuition Assistance?
The U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Program covers most of the expenses involved in pursuing a degree. This includes tuition, any enrollment fees required by the institution, instructional fees, and laboratory fees for any courses with a laboratory component.
While the U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Program pays for 100 percent of eligible expenses, it does have a maximum of $4,500 in benefits that can be paid out per soldier each year. If you have educational expenses that are not covered by tuition assistance, and are eligible for the active duty GI Bill, you may use your GI Bill military benefits to cover expenses that are not covered.
