Students may work with data in a laboratory, or they may work in the field, taking geological samples or observing how people use areas of land. Many geography majors go on to work as civil engineers, overseeing the design and feasibility of roads, buildings, bridges, or other elements of a community's infrastructure. Others become urban or regional planners, developing appropriate, effective, long- and short-term uses for land.
