California has long been known as a land of dreams. With its beautiful beaches, rich agriculture and dominating mountains, it's not hard to see why. The country's most populous state offers opportunities galore for those brave enough to pursue their dreams, whether it's in Hollywood or in San Francisco. This is a state that boasts big business, whether it's show-business, cutting-edge technology, or anything in between. That's one of the reasons a business degree might come in handy. California business schools can offer a number of opportunities for students or professionals who want to move up in their career.

Read on for information about online California business schools in the state whose economy is the seventh-largest in the world, according to Bloomberg. In 2013, the rightfully nicknamed Golden State had a gross domestic product of $2.25 trillion. California is also home to some of the country's best universities and leading business schools, many of which offer online options. And if students choose California to attend business school, they will get perfect weather to boot.

Online Business Programs in California

Online programs are a great option for those students who cannot attend traditional in-classroom programs because of work and family commitments or because they live too far from a university. While online education isn't for everyone, it is becoming more accessible than ever before. Some online programs take less time to complete than traditional in-person classes, and students enjoy the flexibility of being able to complete their classes from anywhere in the state, country or even the world.

Most business and financial professions require a bachelor's degree. Students who are looking at online business schools in California may consider some of the following majors:

  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Accounting
  • Business
  • Mathematics
  • Law

Though not all jobs require it, you may decide to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA), which many people opt to do after they've spent some time in the work force. Some of the most common MBA degrees are in business administration, finance or economics.

Because the range of business careers is so broad, there are no general national certifications required for business school graduates. However, most specific career paths could benefit from having a certification. For example, personal financial advisors must be licensed and registered with the Securities Exchange Commission in order to manage their clients' investments. Many other business-related professions have their own set of required exams, such as becoming a CPA (certified public accountant), financial analyst, HR professional, etc.

Career Outlook for Business Graduates in California

The outlook for graduates of online business schools in California is quite sunny. Below is a list of positions that usually require a business degree with pertinent earnings data, as compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as of May 2014:

Career Total Employment % Growth Projected Average Salary
Financial analysts 31,840 3.4% $102,950
Credit analysts 7,200 6.5% $82,190
Personal financial advisors 22,680 4.5% $113,240

California is a very large state, and different parts of it offer varied forms of potential employment for business school graduates. While an MBA is usually not required, those graduating from business school in Northern California might want to join one of the large technology firms in Silicon Valley, while those in Southern California could focus on the entertainment industry. Of course, there's a lot of state in between, and opportunities await for savvy business school graduates. They may include the wine industry in the Paso Robles area or the hospitality industry in Palm Springs.

Business Specializations

Years ago, most universities only offered three or four specializations for business school, but now there are many opportunities for students to choose from. While not all universities offer all degrees, here's a list of some interesting specializations:

  • Marketing
  • Renewable Energies
  • Management Information Systems
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Management
  • Health Care Administration
  • Environmental Management
  • Supply Change Management
  • Entertainment
  • E-Commerce

Students should spend some time researching the program that meets their individual needs, whether that is an online program or a traditional in-classroom setting. Either way, business school is a solid choice that offers graduates many employment opportunities in California and beyond.
