Question:
What are the education requirements to become a high school coach?
Answer:
There aren't any standard requirements for becoming a high school coach. First and foremost, schools look for coaches who know the sport through and through--preferably, those who have firsthand experience playing the sport. Some schools require a bachelor's degree. Courses in exercise and sports psychology, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education, and sports medicine are a plus.
Most high schools hire their own teachers as coaches. If you have a sports background or academic credentials, you may find the best opportunities at schools with more competitive sports programs. These high schools are more likely to hire a specialized coach rather than recruiting the English teacher to coach on the side. You may start as an assistant coach and then advance to a head coach position after you gain experience.
