A certificate in nursing is a wonderfully versatile thing. After earning a certificate in nursing, you can sit for the NCLEX-RN test to apply for licensure as a registered nurse. With both a nursing certificate and license, you can advise, treat and educate patients; assist with diagnostic tests; prepare patient medical histories; analyze test results; administer medications; and perform many other procedural and patient-related activities. You can also build on a nursing certificate by taking specialized nursing courses or by earning advanced college degrees, which can help you rise to prominence in a position as a nursing manager or administrator. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected employment of registered nurses to grow by 23 percent between 2006 and 2016.
