There are a number of different Florida teaching certifications, depending on the grade levels and subjects you wish to teach. The first requirement is a bachelor's or higher degree in education to teach general subjects at the elementary school level, or a degree in another subject with at least 30 semester hours in specific elementary education courses. In order to teach individual subjects at the middle or secondary school levels, you must have a degree in that subject or at least 30 semester hours in specific courses in that subject curriculum.

When you have graduated from one of these approved Florida teaching programs, you must pass all three portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) in order to qualify for a Professional Florida Educator's Certificate. A Temporary Certificate, allowing you to teach full time, may be issued prior to completion of all three portions of the FTCE. All applicants for teaching positions in Florida public schools must also have fingerprints taken through the school district's personnel office for employment and certification purposes.
